My name is Morena Scrascia and I’m an urban planner. However, the thing I like most is to build dreams. I am a creative person and use my imagination to transform the objects that surround me in order to give them a new form, a new life and a different story to tell to tell, because things have souls just like places, just like us.
I was born and raised in the province of Lecce, Cutrofiano, a small town between two seas located in the heel of Italy. It’s a place that if you have to decide where to go to the beach you just let the wind decide for you, depending on the direction it blows. It’s a place of the past where the passage of time and seasons go by slowly. It’s a place where you can still pick olives by hand as before and where until a few years ago eventhough most people didn’t smoke, everyone knew the smell and taste that the tobacco flower had if you picked it early in the morning.
I studied in the best Italian and European Universities and have lived around the world a bit but have returned to this area of Italy to tell my own story and my stories to others; my tales are often made of maps, codes, numbers and technical regulations. But at night, my dreams are populated by shapes, materials and objects that I’d like to draw and that the next day I feel the need to create.
I like to smell fruit to see if it is good before I buy it, and if I pick it in my garden I like to eat it under the tree; try it … it definitely tastes different.
I like to run when it’s raining outside, and I like the scent of Mediterranean pines when they’re wet.
I like to pick wild asparagus.
I like to touch materials to see if they are cold, warm, genuine or fake. So if you see me walking around. touching the corners of a house, the stones of a road … it’s completely normal … it’s just me.
I do not like hypocritical people, and I do not like men staring at me either.
If I look to the past, I think I would have been happy in America in the ’30s or’ 40s.
I hate buses that are too full and can’t stand delays and generally can’t stand Italian delays.
I went to the lake and didn’t like it because I missed the scent of my sea. When I finally go there I like to breathe deeply and fill my lungs.
When I moved here, my goal was to have a home nestled in olive trees and to be able to smell their scent. Have you ever tried to smell the trunk of an olive tree? There is something magical in their trunk … try his one too.
Well I made it, I built my house among olive trees, I started working as an urban planner and in my free time I transform various materials into wearable sculptures as I call them.
That’s right, each bag is a sculpture, each timber has its own perfume and if I think that every bag that I create is something alive, natural, this thought fills me with pride.
